Kunia Country Farms
Kunia Country Farms began operations in 2010, and is now one of the largest aquaponic farms and producer of leafy greens in the state of Hawaii. You can rest assured knowing your lettuce is locally, sustainably, and aquaponically grown! Their goal is for zero-impact farming that is minimally invasive to the land.Aquaponics is a soil-less farming technology - aquaculture and hydroponics together. Fish tanks and grow troughs are constructed above ground, so there is no depletion of the soil composition, nor application of chemicals/ sprays to the ground. Simply put, the fish in the system naturally provide nutrients for the plants to grow, and the plants in the system act as a biological filter to clean the water returning to the fish.
Kunia Country Farms currently has 20 grow bed troughs built on a 1 acre field. Each trough can hold up to 3,300 plants, although some plants thrive with wider spacing. They utilize re-usable growing material, operate as water-neutral by growing lettuce without adding water, and are moving towards becoming grid-neutral by installing a new photovoltaic system at the farm!
